Speaking during a visit to the mausoleum of Adnan Menderes and his friends, President Erdoğan said: “The Turkish democracy had stumbled with the wounds it had suffered on a May 27. Yet, 63 years later, on another May 27 now, we can’t wait to give the good news at the ballot boxes tomorrow that the era of coups, memorandums and juntas are over.”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan paid a visit to the mausoleum of former Prime Minister Adnan Menderes and his friends in Istanbul.

Speaking during the visit, President Erdoğan noted that the visit is taking place on the occasion of the anniversary of one of the darkest days of the Republican history, and said: “63 years ago on a May 27, Türkiye experienced the first military coup after having transitioned to the multiparty political life. This coup d’état, staged by a clique within the Turkish Armed Forces, did not only hamper our democracy and development moves but also inflicted deep wounds in our hearts.”

“WE CAN’T WAIT TO GIVE THE GOOD NEWS THAT THE ERA OF COUPS IS OVER”

Drawing attention to the special place the late Menderes, who was executed following a sham trial held by the junta, holds in the people’s hearts, President Erdoğan stressed that today’s commemoration takes places with the aim of remembering with grace the late Menderes and his friends on the anniversary of the coup d’état, the beginning of the process that led up to the executions.

The Turkish democracy stumbled with the wounds it suffered on May 27, 1960, stressed the President, and continued: “Yet, 63 years later, on another May 27 now, we can’t wait to give the good news at the ballot boxes tomorrow that the era of coups, memorandums and juntas are over. Our nation appreciates very well the value of democracy behind which lie a lot of endeavors, efforts and sacrifices.”

Describing the high turnout in the first round of the elections as an expression of the people’s will to defend their independence and future via democracy, President Erdoğan went onto say: “Türkiye’s elections stand out not only with their unprecedented turnout but also with their fair and transparent conduct.”
