President Erdoğan: We will continue to take every precaution to ensure that our country doesn’t experience the problems the global energy crisis has caused in Europe

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a speech at the Inauguration of Silivri Underground Natural Gas Storage Facility's capacity expansion.

“SİLİVRİ HAS BECOME THE LARGEST UNDERGROUND GAS STORAGE FACILITY IN EUROPE”

Noting that Silivri Underground Natural Gas Storage Facility’s total capacity has reached 4.6 billion cubic meters with the capacity expansion inaugurated today, President Erdoğan said: “With today’s inauguration, Silivri has become the largest underground gas storage facility in Europe.”

The first phase of the facility in Silivri was put into service in 2017, President Erdoğan recalled. “The latest expansion works were carried out by undertaking 31,000-meter marine drilling in 18 wells with platforms 3 kilometers offshore.  These works were conducted at a pace similar to that of the drilling operations at the Black Sea. All the equipment used in these works was manufactured indigenously, thus contributing to our country’s knowledge in the technology of gas storage facility. Silivri Natural Gas Storage Facility has a recycling capacity of 75 million cubic meters and an injection capacity of 45 million cubic meters per day.”

Pointing out that the facility can meet by itself one fourth of the demand even during the highest consumption period, President Erdoğan said: “We will reach a similar rate at Lake Tuz in Ankara once the capacity expansion works there have been completed. Taking into consideration that our country’s natural gas consumption will be 53.5 billion cubic meters in total this year, the importance of the 4.6 billion cubic meters capacity in Silivri and the targeted 5.4 billion cubic meters capacity at Lake Tuz becomes more visible. I congratulate the ministry as well as the institutions and the contractor company who have contributed to the inauguration of the new phase at Silivri Underground Natural Gas Storage Facility.”

Stressing that investments will continue until Türkiye reaches the most secure level in the exploration and operation as well as storage of natural gas, President Erdoğan said: “We will continue to take every kind of precaution to ensure that our country doesn’t experience in the short and medium term the problems the global energy crisis has caused in Europe or the troubles that would slow down our growth targets in the long term.”
